Found in the Medina began with a brief encounter in Morocco that stayed with me long after I left. I didn’t know the woman’s story, and we didn’t share a language. What stayed with me was her presence — the stillness in her posture, the color and layering of her clothes, and the quiet strength she seemed to hold within a crowded environment.

The painting is not an attempt to invent a story for her. It is about the act of noticing. Warm oranges, deep blacks, and violet floral passages surround the figure, while a circular form taken from the original setting shifts into something almost halo-like. The image sits between observation and memory: a real encounter translated through paint.

This work also marks a turning point in my own process — my first sustained experiment with a more direct, alla-prima-inspired approach, allowing the brushwork to remain visible and the painting to carry more of the immediacy of the encounter.
